Houston to Chico is a true cross-country run, and it is one Murdock’s Moving & Storage carries on our own USDOT and CPUC authority from the first box to the last. Your shipment rolls out of Houston on I-10 West, tracing the long Texas corridor through San Antonio, the Hill Country and El Paso before crossing New Mexico and Arizona past Tucson and Phoenix. From the desert our driver turns north toward the Central Valley, and the final leg follows CA-99 up through Sacramento and the northern Valley into Chico. It is the same truck and the same crew the entire way - no terminal handoff, no freight broker, and no repacking your belongings onto a shared trailer partway across the country.

At better than two thousand miles this is realistically a five-to-seven day transit once federal hours-of-service rules, desert-Southwest weather and the mountain grades are factored in. We run it as a single dedicated load rather than pooling it with other households, so your delivery window belongs to your truck alone. Chico is the hub of Butte County and the northern Sacramento Valley - a walkable university town built around California State University, Chico, and the sprawling green of Bidwell Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country. For someone coming from a metro the size of Houston, the trade is deliberate: a compact, bikeable downtown of brick storefronts, breweries and a genuine college-town rhythm in place of freeway sprawl. Chico sits where the flat Valley farmland meets the Sierra foothills, so almond and walnut orchards, the Sacramento River and hiking trails are all close at hand.

Neighborhoods run from the historic tree-lined avenues near downtown and The Esplanade to newer subdivisions in north Chico and out toward the foothill edge, with nearby Paradise and the ridge communities rebuilding and drawing residents back after the 2018 Camp Fire. Wildfire awareness is simply part of life here, and many newcomers factor defensible space and insurance into where they buy. A move into central Chico often means older homes with tighter access and mature trees for our crew to work around, while newer north-Chico and subdivision deliveries tend to be more straightforward.

Compared with Houston, Chico offers a far smaller, slower-paced community with a strong outdoor identity and a much lower cost of living than coastal California - a common draw for people who want the Northern California landscape and a college-town culture without a big-city price tag or a big-city pace.
