CORRIDOR NOTES

What This Route Changes.

Distances and drive times are planning estimates. Exact access, timing and delivery details are confirmed for each address before the move.

The haul from Minneapolis to Chico is a genuine cross-country run, and Murdock’s handles it the same way in both directions: one truck, one crew, loaded in the Twin Cities and unloaded in Butte County by the same movers who wrapped your furniture at the origin. We roll south on I-35 out of Minneapolis to Des Moines, pick up I-80 westbound, and follow it across the Nebraska plains, over Wyoming's high desert, through Salt Lake City and down past Reno into California. From the Sacramento Valley floor we take CA-99 north the last stretch into Chico. Because we're an owner-operated carrier on our own USDOT and CPUC authority - not a broker - your shipment is never transferred to a stranger's truck or pooled with other households at a warehouse dock.

Realistically this is a 27 to 28 hour drive spread across several days, so we plan a 4 to 6 day transit window that accounts for federal driver-hour rules and Sierra weather. We give you a firm delivery spread up front and stay in contact the whole way. Every Minneapolis-to-Chico move is quoted flat-rate from a written inventory, so the number you approve before we load is the number that holds when we carry your boxes up the steps of your new place off The Esplanade or out in the foothills.

DESTINATION BRIEF

Arriving in Chico.

  • Trading brutal Minnesota winters for a mild Sacramento Valley climate that's sunny and warm most of the year
  • Housing costs far below the Bay Area - and even below Sacramento - so a home sale in the Twin Cities stretches further
  • A genuine college-town lifestyle around Chico State with a walkable, unpretentious downtown
  • Immediate access to the outdoors: Bidwell Park, Sierra foothills, and Lake Almanor and Lassen a short drive up
  • A slower, small-city pace and lower traffic than a major metro like Minneapolis

Chico is a college town at heart - Chico State anchors a walkable downtown of brick storefronts, coffee houses, farmers' markets and the tree-shaded blocks around campus. After a Minneapolis winter, the biggest adjustment is the pace: mild, sunny most of the year, and built for being outside. Bidwell Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country, runs right through town with swimming holes on Big Chico Creek, miles of trails, and Upper Park's rugged canyon on the edge of the Sierra foothills.

Newcomers tend to settle in The Avenues near campus, the historic homes of the Downtown and Mansion Park areas, or the newer family subdivisions toward the northeast around Canyon Oaks and east Chico. The town has done a lot of rebuilding and absorbing of neighbors since the 2018 Camp Fire reshaped nearby Paradise and the ridge, and that has kept housing demand strong while keeping prices well under Bay Area or even Sacramento levels. For a move here, that usually means a single-family home with a yard and a garage - a comfortable target for a full Minneapolis household.

Practically, a Chico delivery is straightforward: most homes have driveway or curb access our crew can work from directly, and we handle reassembly of beds, tables and the gear you hauled out from Minnesota so you're settled the same day we unload.
