CORRIDOR NOTES

What This Route Changes.

Distances and drive times are planning estimates. Exact access, timing and delivery details are confirmed for each address before the move.

Chico sits near the top of the Sacramento Valley, so the San Diego to Chico move is one of the longer in-state hauls we run, roughly 610 miles and about ten to ten and a half hours behind the wheel. Our crews take Interstate 5 north out of San Diego, climb through the Los Angeles basin and over the Grapevine at Tejon Pass, then run the length of the Central Valley past Stockton and Sacramento before cutting up toward Butte County and the Sierra foothills.

Murdock’s is an owner-operated carrier based right in Chico, so this is a route our drivers know and one where our own yard is the destination. The same truck and crew that pack your San Diego home carry it the full distance and unload it in Chico, with no broker in the middle and no transfer to a shared long-haul trailer. On a move this length that continuity is the difference between a firm flat rate with a real delivery date and an open-ended window from a booking middleman.

DESTINATION BRIEF

Arriving in Chico.

  • Home prices are dramatically lower than San Diego's coast, making first-time ownership realistic
  • A relaxed, walkable college-town lifestyle anchored by CSU Chico and a lively downtown
  • Bidwell Park and the Sierra foothills put hiking, creek swimming, and the outdoors at the doorstep
  • Far more house, land, and yard per dollar than a coastal Southern California budget allows
  • A tight-knit, slower-paced community that appeals to families and remote workers leaving the big city

Chico is Northern California's quintessential college town, built around California State University, Chico, and it has a walkable, tree-canopied downtown that feels a world away from a San Diego commute. The centerpiece is Bidwell Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country, stretching from downtown up Big Chico Creek into the rugged foothills, so swimming holes, trails, and shade are minutes from most neighborhoods.

Families and remote workers coming from San Diego find they can buy a real house with a yard for a fraction of coastal prices. Popular areas include the historic Avenues near campus, the leafy Chapman and Barber neighborhoods, and newer master-planned developments on the east side toward the foothills. The town has also rebuilt and grown in the years since the 2018 Camp Fire, absorbing new residents and construction across the Ridge and greater Butte County.

A move into Chico usually means unpacking into a larger, older home or a newer suburban build, and our local crews know the narrow Avenues streets, the campus-adjacent rentals, and the foothill grades on the east side. Being headquartered in Chico means we can hold, stage, or store your shipment at our own yard if your closing or lease start doesn't line up with the truck's arrival.
